DEEP CLEAN
Our first choice is to hire someone else to do it. But let's face it, most of us either can't, or don't want to, pay for that. So for all the DIY-er's out there, here's a quick summary for deep cleaning your new home. Because, no one wants to share the germs and dirt of their home's previous owner, regardless of how tidy that individual kept their home. Do this BEFORE unpacking. It'll make the job go light years faster.
Begin with the bathrooms and kitchen. These rooms tend to harbor the most grime and germs. Clean from the top down. Using a broom, mop, rag... whatever your choice may be, wipe down your ceilings, walls, switch covers, light fixtures, and baseboards. Next move to your cabinets and counters. We like to use a vacuum hose attachment to suck up dirt and crumbs inside cabinetry. Next, using your go-to cleaning solution (we like vinegar, but some prefer bleach water), wipe down all those cabinets and counter-tops. Last, but not least, use a disinfecting solution to mop your floors.
Once finished with the bathrooms and kitchen, move to the "easier" rooms. Once again, wipe down the ceiling, walls, switch plates, and light fixtures. Then move to the floors. SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS
If the home has existing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, check to see how old they are. Manufacturers are required to print the unit production date on detectors. Check the date on all of your detectors. If the unit is over 10 years old, replace it. If it's under 10 years old, make sure, at the very least, to replace the batteries. While we're on the topic, don't forget about fire extinguishers. Every home should have at least functioning fire extinguisher on every floor.
